Over the last decade, major cruise lines have transitioned from natural teak wood decking systems to synthetic decking systems, most notably, poured polymer decking systems manufactured by Bolidt and API. Over the same timeframe, the industry has seen a marked increase in 'hot deck' related burns. George will cover the science behind why these decks get dangerously hot, including concepts such as exposure time in contact, special populations, etc. He will follow up with inspection methodology, industry standards for prevention of contact burns, and a discussion on remedy - deck treatment, maintenance, and warning. Lastly, George will delve into foreseeability and notice.
