Many consumer vehicles operate at Level 2 or Level 3 autonomy, meaning they require human supervision and intervention. Companies like Tesla, GM (Super Cruise), and Mercedes-Benz use advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), but true Level 4 autonomy (fully autonomous in specific conditions) is still limited to pilot programs. Robotaxis and roboshuttles are currently the primary focus for Level 4 passenger vehicle autonomy, with companies like Waymo operating in select cities under controlled conditions. However, the number of Level 4 autonomous vehicles operating in real-world conditions. is expected to grow significantly by 2030.
In addition, autonomous trucking is closer to large-scale deployment than passenger AVs due to simpler highway driving conditions. Several companies are already conducting driverless freight runs in the United States, especially in the Southwest.
The Autonomous Vehicle Litigation Group focuses on the legal issues involving autonomous passenger vehicles and trucks in accidents and system failures. The group provides a forum for AAJ members to discuss this emerging technology and share information related to autonomous vehicles.
