Snowmobiling while intoxicated

July 18, 2024

Robert Groter, 75, was snowmobiling in Vilas County, Wis., when Andrew Speiss allegedly came down a run at over 65 mph and lost control of his snowmobile, crashing head-on into Groter. Both men were killed. Toxicology reportedly revealed Speiss had a blood-alcohol content of .18 at the time of his death. Groter is survived by his wife of 56 years and his two adult children.

The estate claimed Speiss was liable for Groter’s wrongful death.

The parties settled for $500,000 homeowners policy limits before suit was filed.

Citation: In re Groter, settled before filing, Jan. 24, 2024.

Claimant counsel: AAJ members David J. Rashid and Rob L. Kohen, both of Chicago.
